Iowa Fish Atlas

Lake chub-Couesius plumbeus

Native: Yes

State Rank: SX

ITIS Code: 163535

National Rank: N5

Global Rank: G5

Modeled By: Anna Loan-Wilsey

State Range:

The lake chub has been collected and verified only once in Iowa, from Twin Springs Creek northwest of Dubuque.  Since this occurrence in northeastern Iowa is far south of the lake chub’s continental range, its presence in Iowa waters appears to be an example of a glacial relic species (Harlan et al. 1987).  The lake chub is presumed to be extirpated from the state.

Habitat Affinities:

The lake chub, although it tolerates a wide variety of habitats, prefers cool streams and lakes with bottoms of sand (Backlund 1996; Becker 1983; Gilbert and Williams 2002).  In Wisconsin, it is found in the shore waters of Lakes Superior and Michigan, commonly about the mouths of tributary streams in shallow depths (Becker 1983).

Predictive Model(s):

Statewide Model: Range Only

The distribution is based upon existing collection records and professional review.

No Prediction
