The river carpsucker is the most abundant and widespread of the carpsuckers in Iowa.  It is found in nearly every watershed and occurs in large numbers in nearly all of the large interior rivers,  as well as the Great Border rivers (Harlan et al. 1987). 

Habitat Affinities:

The river carpsucker is adaptable to a variety of habitats but is most often found in quiet ponds, pools, and oxbows of major lowland rivers having low to moderate gradient (Pflieger 1997; Robison and Buchanan 1988; Etnier and Starnes 1993). In the Ohio River the largest populations occurs in the deeper waters (Trautman 1981). This carpsucker thrives in the silty, turbid waters of rivers, river impoundments and reservoirs with slow currents over soft bottoms of sand, clay, and gravel (Becker 1983; Cross and Collins 1995; Harlan et al. 1987).
