Iowa Fish Atlas

Pallid shiner-Notropis amnis

Native: Yes

State Rank: S3

ITIS Code: 163411

National Rank: N4

Global Rank: G4

Modeled By: Anna Loan-Wilsey

State Range:

Being at the extreme northern limit of its range,  the pallid shiner in Iowa is restricted to the upper pools of the Mississippi River, where it is rare in fish collections (Harlan et al. 1987).

Habitat Affinities:

The pallid shiner is found in sloughs, backwaters, reservoirs and oxbow lakes but is most common in medium to large, muddy streams of lowland areas (Clay 1975; Etnier and Starnes 1993; Pflieger 1997; Robison and Buchanan 1988). Its preferred microhabitat is shallow, moderately clear and well-oxygenated waters with slight current and substrates of sand or mud (Kwak 1991; Robison and Buchanan 1988). In Iowa, the pallid shiner is often found in flowing water over sand bars (Harlan et al. 1987).  The status of the pallid shiner is a matter of concern.  In Iowa, the pallid shiner was considered “quite common to the entire stretch” of the Mississippi River (Harlan and Speaker 1969).  However, the number of collections containing this species in its northern range since the mid-twentieth century are almost nonexistent and the pallid shiner may be heading toward extirpation (Becker 1983; Eddy and Underhill 1974; Harlan et al. 1987; Pflieger 1997; Smith 1979).
