- Title: Aquatic Ecological System (AES) rankings for EPA region 7
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: tabular digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This dbf table was developed to help identify aquatic conservation focus areas for EPA Region 7 (IA, KS, NE) and is intended to be used in conjunction with the R7_AES.shp shapefile that was also developed as part of the same project. Missouri was done previously as part of another project and is therefore available as a separate dataset. The table contains information regarding stressors in each Aquatic Ecological System (AES) polygon. Many of the attributes were calculated using the Analytical Tools Interface for Landscape Assessments (ATtILA) Version 3.0 which is an ESRI ArcView 3.x extension. These "raw" stressor values were subsequently ranked to develop a human stressor index and identify aquatic focus areas.
This table relates to the R7_AES.shp shapefile using the common identifier AES_ID.
- Purpose:
-
Developed to identify aquatic conservation focus areas for EPA Region 7.

Four metric groups are currently included in ATtILA: landscape characteristics, riparian characteristics, human stresses and physical characteristics. There are also four display options to view metric results. ATtILA is written in Avenue, ArcView's programming language, and is designed to accommodate spatial data from a variety of sources.

1. We generated statistics for the 9 individual human stressors (e.g., percent agriculture, percent urban, lead mine density, coal mine density, dam density, density of stream road crossings, density of industrial facility discharge sites, population change, degree of fragmentation) for each of the AES polygons. These metrics were generated with the EPA Analytical Tools Interface for Landscape Assessments (ATtILA, Version 3.0), which is an ArcView 3.x extension. Point data metrics were simply generated by sum or calculating densities for data obtained from EPA BASINS 3.1 or data explicitly developed for Missouri. Finally, three additional metrics, pertaining to hydrologic modification and network fragmentation, were categorical metrics and were visually determined by overlaying reservoir boundaries (from the NHD) onto the AES polygon boundaries. All of the metrics were calculated for each individual polygon and do not represent conditions within the overall watershed of each AES polygon.

2. The percent of public land within each AES polygon was computed using the GAP Stewardship layers for Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. This was accomplished by tabulating areas in ArcView 3.3. Before using the Stewardship layers we removed all major lakes from the files to avoid counting inundated areas as "public lands".
